Homophony:
The representation of the same sound by different signs.

On the Pronunciation of the Egyptian Language: Did Champollion and Gardiner Make a Mistake?
Champollion came to Egypt and heard the Copts pronounce the Coptic language at that time. Knowing that Coptic was the Egyptian language, he used its pronunciation as a guide to determine the pronunciation of hieroglyphic symbols. He based this on the Copts’ pronunciation of Coptic words of Egyptian origin that he found written in hieroglyphs, even though the pronunciation of the Coptic language had changed over the years. Champollion’s pronunciation of some hieroglyphic symbols may have been incorrect if he relied on the incorrect pronunciation practiced by the Copts in the 19th century.
And to those who don’t believe this, please examine the hieroglyphic sign used to write the word “Cleopatra” in the Egyptian cartouche and compare it with the Greek script.
The hand symbol in Cleopatra’s cartouche represents the letter “t” (ت), not “d” (د). If Egyptologists have consistently used the hand symbol to represent “d” (د), this is incorrect, as in Cleopatra’s cartouche it represents “t” (ت). In other words, “t” (ت) is represented by more than one symbol.
This is a common phenomenon in languages: a sound can be represented by more than one symbol.
Homophony:
The representation of the same sound by different signs.
This makes us think twice whenever we encounter the hand symbol in hieroglyphic writing: does it represent the letter “d” (د) or “t” (ت)?
Furthermore, Gardiner and others erred when they wrote that the hand symbol represents the letter “d” (د) in hieroglyphic writing in the Egyptian language, without mentioning that it sometimes represents the letter “t” (ت).
They should have stated that it represents either “d” (د) or “t” (ت), as in the cartouche of the word “Cleopatra,” for example.
Champollion would have been mistaken if he had assumed that the Coptic pronunciation of a letter in the Coptic language in the nineteenth century was the same as the pronunciation of the same letter in the same word in hieroglyphic writing.
